What vehicle(s) do you drive?
Monte Carlo 72
Hi I Have destroyed the CAM thrust surface in my block. Hot rollercam with high springload. Cloyes timing set and a cambutton with needles
Does anyone know If this is a common problem with rollercams? Do I need to use some kind of bearing, Torrington?
Regards
Erik

Man I just saw this post for the first time. The common modification is a 'ditch' that you grind that diverts oil from the lifter galley, over the edge of the front hole in the block, that flows down behind the timing gear. sounds like you didn't leave adequate clearance between the thrust bearing and timing cover.

Thankes for your answer. I am now replacing the damage area with bronze. I Will make this ditch you describe maybe I had to little clearance to. Maybe drill a small hole in to the oil galley for even better oiling.

I bought some spot face counter bore cutters and mounted them on cut off cadillac cam shafts and powered them with hand drill. I had to use 2 cutters because I couldn't find one cutter with id and od on one cutter. Machined to .060 depth and made bronze thrust washer from sheet of bronze I bought from online metal supplier.

Heres my tooling to machine the cam thrust area. I machine carefully till cam gear is aligned with crank gear with .060 bronze thrust washer installed on camshaft. I couldnt find one counterbore to machine in one operation. Ive done two blocks. One was repair. The other was using bronze thrust Before problem happened.
